Welcome to Vertex 2020!

After a very long morning travelling through London in the terrible weather, I arrived at the Olympia Conference Centre to be a part of Vertex 2020.

I am going to start off by saying how great it felt to walk through those doors and be greeted by a range of people within the creative industry and also those in the same boat as me - aspiring to one day be a part of it.

During my time spent at Vertex I tried to cram in a few bits that I really wanted to do - I briefly watched a digital drawing demo done by the Concept Artist, Illustrator and Fine Artist, Karla Ortiz, I spoke to the Blue Zoo Animation team at their stand and I attended Izzy Burton's talk on storytelling.

When talking to the Blue Zoo team I was very inspired as they encouraged me to get on board with their internship program, look through their careers page and pitch ideas towards a short film - the team were absolutely fantastic, they gave great words of encouragement and reassurance to everyone who approached the stand as well as some wonderful advice tips.

After speaking with Blue Zoo, I attended the talk given by Director and Artist, Izzy Burton. This was another inspiring part of the day as she spoke about how she had a passion for writing stories from a very early age and how she built on this talent to then get into the creative industry.

Burton discussed the process of how she develops a story, from the initial idea to the animated sequence. She spoke of the development and production of her works, 'Via' 2018, 'A Whale's Tale' 2018 and 'Stella' 2019, and how each idea originally came about, teaching me and room full of people that a great idea can come from anything.

She also displayed her environments and character design work, looking deeply into the colour palettes, references, shapes and how all aspects of a design should fit together to display the right type of atmosphere and emotion in a story.

Overall the trip to Vertex was very inspiring and engaging and I would like to thank the University Centre South Essex for getting all of the students and staff up there to be a part of it all!
